James Ivan Lane Jr. was honored as Veteran of the Year by both North Bergen and Hudson County.
Lane Jr. served as a gunner in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1968 to 1970 in Vietnam.
"Lane was unable to attend the Veterans Day ceremony in North Bergen, where his honor was announced, so Mayor Nicholas Sacco and the North Bergen Board of Commissioners presented Lane with a congratulatory plaque at a commission meeting in December," says the township.
Lane gratefully accepted the award on behalf of his fellow soldiers in Vietnam with his wife Patricia.
Born in Georgia to a military family, Lane moved to Harlem in 1956 and eventually to North Bergen.
In addition to serving in Vietnam he was stationed in Japan, the Philippines, Hawaii, Hong Kong, and elsewhere. Following his discharge from the service, he worked for the U.S. Post Office and has volunteered for the past 14 years to help veterans with medical services.
