Are you an aspiring journalist eager to grow your portfolio and make a difference in your community? We’re looking for a part-time freelance journalist based in Hudson County, New Jersey, to help tell the stories that matter most to our neighbors.

This role is ideal for entry-level reporters who are curious, driven, and passionate about giving their community a voice. You’ll have the opportunity to pitch ideas, report from the field, and build your bylines while working closely with our editorial team. If you rarely let a great story — or opportunity — pass you by, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research & Reporting: Pitch, research, and write stories on local news, community issues, and events across Hudson County.
  • Interviewing: Connect with residents, leaders, and local experts to bring authentic voices into your stories.
  • Fact-Checking & Editing: Ensure every piece is accurate, fair, and clear.
  • Digital Publishing: Prepare content for online publication, including headlines, images, and social media copy.
  • Collaboration: Communicate regularly with editors, contribute story ideas, and attend virtual editorial meetings.
  • Community Engagement: Develop sources and relationships within Hudson County’s diverse neighborhoods.
  • Field Coverage: Attend local board meetings, press conferences, community events, and other assignments throughout the county as needed (some travel within Hudson County required).

  • A self-starter who’s curious, proactive, and passionate about journalism.
  • Based in Hudson County, NJ, and familiar with its communities and local issues.
  • Interested in growing your reporting skills and professional portfolio.
  • Comfortable meeting deadlines and working independently.
  • Committed to accuracy, fairness, and ethical reporting.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience writing for student media, blogs, or local outlets.
  • Familiarity with AP Style and digital publishing tools (e.g., WordPress, Canva, CapCut).
  • Photography, multimedia, or social media storytelling experience is a plus.
